How to prepare for a photo session

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you viewed an awesome photo online. Maybe you have been thinking of having a photo session for a long time. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, We can help you tell your story and can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about being perfect. You are beautiful everyday. Reading about how to prepare is a big step to making sure we have a successful photo session and make your vision come to life!

Not all photographers are the same, just like all tattoo artist, painters, and people are not the same. Find a photographer who has a style the same as what you envision your portraits to look like. Style matters. If you like dark and moody portraits, bright warm portraits or anything in between find a photographer who has a portfolio that matches what you are looking for. You wouldn’t ask Vincent van Gogh to paint you a portrait and ask for it to look like a Pablo Picasso portrait. Same with photographers.

Once you have found a photographer with a style that matches what you want. Send them a message. Make sure they are the photographer for you. Ask all the questions you want. Trust me, it is only a bother to the non-professional photographers. What to ask? Find out the length of a session, how many outfit changes you may have, will hair and make-up be provided (might bean extra charge), do they travel or work in a studio, do they offer the type of deliverables you are looking for (digital files, prints, frame, cavas, ect.) Make sure they offer the services you are looking for and can answer your questions. The photographer will go over retainers, contracts and deliverables. The meeting should cover and answer all your questions. If you like what you hear, Book your session with that photographer!

Before your session, there are a few things you will need to do to make sure you are well prepared and have a successful session!

  1. Drink plenty of water.

Drinking plenty of water in the week before your photo session will keep you hydrated and help your skin glow! We all want to look our best and staying hydrated is the best way to do that!

  2. Get plenty of sleep the night before!

I can’t stress this enough. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. The night before plan on turning in early. It can be stressful thinking about the session and the things that could possibly maybe go wrong. Know you are in the best hands with us. You just need to make sure you get some great sleep so you are well rested.

  3. Be creative with your outfits and make sure they fit well.

The more options you have on hand the better! Certain things may photograph well that you didn’t consider. Its always a great idea to think outside the box. You also want to to feel like your most confident self, so make sure you love your outfits and everything fits well!

  4. Bring more then one pair of shoes and heels.

shoes can make an outfit! bring a few extra just in case. 4inch heals or larger look best on camera.

5. If you are planing on getting a spray tan, go to a professional.

Spray tans can make your skin come alive on camera. Especially if you don’t spend a lot of time outside. Choose a light shade that compliments your skin tone and go to a professional 2-3 days before a session. Shower the night before and come into your photo session glowing!

6. Wear loose fitting clothing the morning of and on your way to the photo session.

Tight or strap clothings can and will leave indentations on your skin. They will show up in your images. Help avoid that by wearing some sweats or relaxed fitting clothing.

7. Trust your photographer

Being in front of the camera isn’t always the most natural thing. To help fix the discomfort and ensure your portraits look amazing, arrive to the session and put your trust into your photographer. Listen to their posing recommendations. Trust the process.
